After-School Progam for Children
The Landers is an affordable after-school program for underserved children ages 5-5th grade who attend Denham Spring Elementary School.
Our Landers children receive tutoring and homework help.
And, of course, they also get to play and have fun.
We also focus on developing character skills and teaching children how to live off of the land.
More than an After-School Program
These days, many children have working parents who are unable to be home when their children get out of school.
We knew kids needed help with their homework and a loving, safe place to go.
But we also wanted to give the children opportunities to learn how to grow vegetables and how to build a chicken coop and gather chicken eggs.
One year, the children took lentil sprouts and eggs to the Mattie Street Art Market to sell.
Along with children in our arts program, Young Artists’ Academy, the kids set up their booth, negotiated prices, and walked around advertising their artwork and fresh produce.
These lifelong skills will teach children to love the land and hopefully will promote healthy eating, too.
Plus, it’s fun to dig in the dirt, learn to use tools and build things, and watch your hard work pay off.
The LANDers children feel great joy when they see the fruits of their labor and get to taste what a super fresh tomato tastes like.
And, they are making lifelong friends!
What if Every Child Knew They Mattered?
What if every child had hope to grow on?
Each one is a unique gift from God.
Formed by God.
Known by God.
Even before they were born.
It breaks His heart when children
have to take care of children.
So, He birthed the LANDers —
a place where children can be children.
Nurtured by adults who love them. Tutored. Fed.
Taught how to live Christ-like lives.
Meet Our Director
Our Director, Shannon Martin, is a true gift to the LANDers and to everyone who meets her.
In her own words, “I have never felt such a close connection with a church and in my relationship with Christ, as I do since coming to Luke 10:27.”
Shannon and her husband, Rory, are blessed with four boys (Shayne-21, Walker-18, Pierce-16 and Eason-3). They moved to Louisiana from Atlanta, GA in 2021. Shannon earned her A & P license and worked as an aircraft mechanic, tool calibrater, and parts buyer in Aviation while living in Atlanta.
In 2022 she had the privilege of working with the children at LANDers. She says, “I have never felt happier! I truly enjoyed sharing in a part of their lives! I am most passionate about supporting, inspiring and caring for children using faith and love!”
